TRFC Classes

TRFC offers Beginner, Intermediate and Advanced classes, as well as individual lessons.  Classes are held at the Club, which is located at 7501 Penn Avenue (the Factory) in Point Breeze.  We also teach classes in the South Hills and the North Hills.

Beginner Classes

Our "Learn To Fence" Beginner course is generally an 8- or 6-week program that meets once a week. No previous experience is required, and the TRFC provides all the necessary equipment.  Separate groups are available for Youth and Adult Beginners.  Youth must be at least 7 years old to be considered for enrollment.  Fencers 13 and older can join the Adult classes.

The Beginner course covers warm-up exercises and stretching, basic footwork and blade work, and essential tactics and strategies.  The format involves group instruction, individual attention, drills, games, and one-on-one matches between students. By the end of the course, participants will understand the fundamentals of fencing a "bout" against an opponent.

Regular Beginner Class Schedule:

New Beginner Classes are introduced on a regular basis, and the new start dates will be listed as they are finalized.  Call the TRFC at 412-731-4454 for information about additional class starting dates.

Preparing for Class

When you come to class, please wear athletic clothing, including long pants and a comfortable t-shirt and sneakers.  (Long pants are required for bladework and bouting because the protective fencing jackets we provide don't cover the legs.)  Freedom of movement is essential to fencing, so street clothing like jeans are not recommended.  You might want to bring an additional t-shirt to change into after class, especially if the weather is warm - you will sweat!

Intermediate Practices

Intermediate Practices are generally attended by fencers who have completed the Beginner Classes and Summer Camps.

Advanced Practices

Most fencers who have mastered the basics continue on to individual lessons with our coaches and participate in Advanced Practices.  These practices include advanced foil and epee fencers, and instruction by our coaches.   In-house practice competitions prepare fencers for local, regional, and national tournaments sponsored by the United States Fencing Association (USFA).

For additional information on any of our classes, please call the TRFC at 412-731-4454.
