Congratulations to Lynn Botelho, who just won the Gold Medal at the 2011 National Championships in Reno Nevada.  Lynn completed a perfect 6-0 record in the pools, tied as the Number 1 seed, and continued undefeated to claim the Gold Medal in the Veteran 40 Women's Foil Event!  Completed in professional style, I might add!  Congratulations to Lynn, and her coach, Iana Dakova!  We salute you!

Update - Lynn also was a member of the Gold-Medal winning Women's Over-40 Veteran Foil Team

TRFC at National Championships!

The Three Rivers Fencing Center sent a cadre of athletes to Reno, Nevada, to compete at the 2011 National Championships from July 1-10.  Here are our representative athletes, along with our results:

  1. Lynn Botelho - GOLD in the Over-40 Veterans Womens Foil, GOLD in Over-40 Veteran Foil Team Event
  2. Bradley Cellier - 7th in the Over-40 Veterans Mens Foil, Anchored Over-40 GOLD Medal winning Veteran Foil Team
  3. Guy Beresteanu - 45 out of 107 competitors in Youth 10 Men's Foil (MF)
  4. Simon Schaitkin - 123 out of 184 competitors in Under 16 MF, 178 of 235 in Under 19 MF
  5. Max Findley - 96 of 235 in Under 19 MF
The Elite Event at Summer National Championships is the Division 1A Event.  We had two excellent Top 16 finishes, where our fencers very nearly made the Finals:
  1. Stephen Baker finished 10th
  2. Max Findley finished 14th
These are very impressive finishes, and they should be congratulated.  Congratulations, Gentlemen!

Also, the TRFC put together a Men's Foil Team, who finished 6th out of 23 teams.  This was a very strong team, which lost by one touch in overtime to the Silver Medalist Team of Empire United Fencing from New York City.  Anchored by Max Findley, this team was in the running to medal at the National Champonships.  The TRFC Team consisted of:

  1. Max Findley
  2. Stephen Baker
  3. Bradley Cellier

It was truly my pleasure to compete along side Stephen and Max, who both performed extraordinarily well under high pressure.  Well Done! CIMG5417

Olympic Medals!

They did it!  The USA Women's Foil Team defeated the 2007 World Championship Polish Team, then defeated Hungary to win the Silver Medal, eventually losing to the Russians in the Gold Medal Bout.  Likewise the Men's Saber Team won the Silver Medal!  In addition, the USA women's fencers swept the Olympic saber individual event, winning gold, silver and bronze!  We were hoping for big things, but it doesn't get any better than that!  Mariel Zagunis repeated her gold medal performance from Athens, and Sada Jacobson and Becca Ward won silver and bronze, respectively.  Read all about it, here: http://www.nbcolympics.com/fencing/news/newsid=185387.html#three+all+u+s+sweeps+sabre

2008 National Championships

The Three Rivers Fencing Center was represented well at the National Championships this year.  12 Fencers competed, making the trip to San Jose, CA, and we even collected some hardware!  Stephen Baker won the Bronze Medal in the Division II Event! - this is a special result, as the Division II Event is extremely challenging.  Likewise, Lynn Botelho won the Bronze Medal in the Veteran Foil event!  Competing at National Championships is a victory in itself, and we are proud of all of our competitors!  Special thanks to Coach Iana Dakova, who coached our fencers for the 10 days of events.
